Frequently Asked Questions

About My Services

  • Unlike app-based services that rotate different caregivers, your pet receives consistent, personalized care from me alone. I take the time to truly know each pet's unique personality, preferences, and routines. Many clients mention that their pets form such deep bonds with me that they're just as excited to see me as they are their own family. This level of connection and continuity simply isn't possible with services that send different caregivers each time.

  • Your pet's wellbeing and safety are of paramount importance to me as well as to you. Prior to the first pet sitting booking, I offer a free First Date (of up to 30 minutes) where I have an opportunity to meet you and your pup. During this time I'll take notes on special requirements and preferences. No two dogs are the same and it is important to ensure that both you and your pet feel comfortable.

Because your pet will be taken care of in their familiar home environment, it is far less likely that they will pick up any illnesses that are often transmitted between animals when boarded in shared facilities.

Each of my packages comes with daily updates and images of your dog which can be sent to you via text twice per day. You can also follow my Instagram stories to see your pet in real time @petsittingnyc.

  • When I am pet sitting, aside from any short local outings (usually 1-2 hours a day), I am almost always with your pet. I genuinely love being around animals so your pet won't be lonely! I like to give a lot of TLC to the pets in my care, whilst also being considerate of their space.

  • No, absolutely not. I do not have any other guests visiting your property whilst I am pet sitting (with the exception of my husband occasionally dropping off items for me). Client confidentiality is very important to me, as is having respect for your home environment. Also, no guests means that your pet does not have to deal with any further anxieties regarding strangers invading their space.

  • My primary service area includes Manhattan's Upper East Side, Upper West Side, and Midtown neighborhoods. However, for established clients, I also offer Out-of-State Services to Connecticut, Pennsylvania, The Hamptons, Florida, Los Angeles, and other locations upon request. This allows your pet to maintain their relationship with me even when you've relocated or are at a vacation property.

  • You'll receive thoughtful, detailed updates that include photos and videos of your pet enjoying their time with me. These "pupdates" are sent twice daily via text and typically include information about walks, meals, play sessions, and any notable moments or observations. Many clients mention that these updates provide tremendous peace of mind while they're away.

Pet Care & Handling

  • Definitely. It is my job to ensure that your pet has the minimum amount of disruption to their regular routine, which also includes mealtimes. I will not feed your pet anything other than their normal diet and I ask that you leave the required amount of food/treats that your pet will need.

I always ensure that fresh water is available for your pet at all times. During the summer months I carry a portable bowl on dog walks so your pet can stay hydrated.

  • No. When outside, your dog will stay on the leash at all times unless they are in a completely enclosed and safe area, and I have your express permission.

  • Yes, as long as they are happy to go out, walks will still take place. Many dogs are not big fans of rain or snow (like us humans!) but there are options available for those that are unwilling to get wet, such as hall play or indoor fetch. My main focus is that your dog enjoys the time I spend with them and that they are exercised, safe and happy.

  • Yes, I can administer most oral and topical medications. I have experience with senior pets with multiple medication needs, and those requiring special rehabilitation after surgery. There is a small additional fee of $2.50 for medication administration.

  • Before beginning care, I'll ask for your veterinarian's information, your emergency contact details, and your preferences should an urgent situation arise. I have experience handling a variety of emergency situations and will always prioritize your pet's wellbeing. Many clients note my calm, decisive approach during unexpected circumstances as one of the reasons they trust me completely with their beloved companions.

  • Yes, I have worked with and recommend Shelby Semel Dog Training. Although I'm not a trainer, I will always try to be consistent with any training your pup is currently undertaking, as long as it focuses on positive reinforcement.

Booking & Availability

  • I typically book up months in advance for regular services, and my calendar fills particularly quickly during holiday periods and summer months. For special occasions, my clients have been known to book me up to a year in advance (my maximum booking window).

While I occasionally can accommodate last-minute requests for established clients, I strongly recommend securing your dates as early as possible. As a single-provider service committed to exceptional care, this advanced planning ensures I can devote my full attention to each pet in my care.

  • All pet sitting is paid for in advance via Venmo, Zelle or cash. A 50% deposit is required to secure the booking. The remaining 50% is paid in full prior to pet sitting commencing.

Cancellations that take place less than 10 days prior to the booking commencement date will not have deposits refunded. For major holidays and peak times a non-refundable 50% deposit is required.

  • Yes, for day sitting, the minimum booking is three hours. For overnight stays, there is a one-night minimum. For Out-of-State Services, minimum booking requirements vary based on location and travel time required.

  • Due to high demand and my commitment to providing personalized care, I maintain a selective waiting list for new clients. Priority is given to those in my primary service areas whose schedule needs and pet care requirements align well with my services. I carefully evaluate each enquiry to ensure I can provide the exceptional level of care your pet deserves.

Services & Pricing

  • Overnight care includes evening walks, dinner service, companionship, and playtime in the evening, a comfortable overnight stay in your home, and morning care with breakfast and walks before departure. Your pet maintains their normal routine in the comfort of their own environment. The house is kept tidy, mail is collected, and lights may be alternated to maintain security.

  • Yes, there is an additional fee of £10 per walk for each additional dog in the same household. This reflects the extra time, attention, and care required when managing multiple pets. Special discounts may apply for long-term, regular bookings with multiple pets.

  • Yes, a 20% holiday surcharge applies on the following holidays: Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Weekend (Thursday through Sunday), Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year's Eve, and New Year's Day. This reflects the premium demand during these periods.

  • I accept Venmo, Zelle, and cash payments. All pet sitting is paid for in advance, with a 50% deposit required to secure the booking and the remaining 50% paid in full prior to pet sitting commencing.

Out-of-State Services

  • Absolutely. I happily accept requests for pups in other areas/states if travel costs and travel time are fully compensated, including any taxis to train/airport. I have provided services in Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Florida, Los Angeles, and can serve other locations upon request.

  • Travel expenses are calculated based on distance, duration, and method of transportation required. These are discussed and agreed upon during the booking process and are additional to the daily rate of £205 for out-of-state care. For destinations requiring air travel, flight costs and any necessary ground transportation are included in the travel expense calculation.

  • Yes, I stay in your home to provide consistent, around-the-clock care for your pet in their familiar environment. This ensures your pet maintains their normal routine while receiving the same exceptional level of care they're accustomed to, regardless of location.

  • This premium service involves me accompanying your family on vacation to provide dedicated pet care during your trip. This allows you to enjoy family activities and non-pet-friendly excursions while your pet receives expert care from their familiar caregiver. It's ideal for families who wish to include their pet in travel plans but need assistance managing their care during the trip. Pricing is custom and based on duration, location, and specific requirements.

Experience & Qualifications

  • Yes, my insurance is renewed annually via Pet Sitters Associates and I am happy to show a copy of my certification upon request.

  • With over ten years of professional experience, I've worked with a wide variety of breeds and temperaments. While I have experience across many breeds, I typically look after small to medium dogs under 55lbs due to a back issue. My approach is always tailored to the individual pet's personality and needs, whether they're high-energy pups requiring substantial exercise or shy rescue dogs needing gentle reassurance. I'm particularly experienced in creating comfort for anxious pets and have additional training in senior pet care.

Getting Started

  • The first step is to complete the enquiry form on my contact page with details about your pet, location, and service needs. I'll respond within 48 hours to discuss your requirements in more detail. For qualified enquiries, we'll arrange a meet-and-greet at your home where I can meet your pet and learn about their specific care needs.

  • Yes, for new clients I offer a free "First Date" (of up to 30 minutes) where I have an opportunity to meet you and your pup. During this time I'll take notes on special requirements and preferences. This gives your pet a chance to meet me in their comfortable environment and allows me to learn about their specific routines. No two dogs are the same, and it is important to ensure that both you and your pet feel comfortable.

  • Before our first official booking, I'll need your pet's feeding schedule, exercise requirements, medical information, veterinary contact details, your emergency contact information, any behavioral considerations, your home entry instructions, and any household details I should be aware of. This comprehensive information ensures I can provide seamless care that maintains your pet's routine perfectly.

  • I ask that you provide adequate food, treats, medications, leashes/harnesses, waste bags, and any comfort items your pet enjoys. A clean home and bedding is appreciated. Access instructions (keys, doorman arrangements, entry codes) should be tested before your departure. A detailed care sheet with your pet's routine and any special instructions is extremely helpful.
